I had a requirement where I have to point a sub domain to a different ip address where my main domain is posted somewhere else.
The scenario is given below. I have a domain name “baabtra.com” and it is hosted at XYZ hosting(XYZ is an imaginary name). Now I want to point blog.baabtra.com, here blog is the sub domain to 184.108.40.206(Just gave a random IP address).
How do we address this issue. We have our domain registered at godaddy.com and the hosting is somewhere else. What people usually will do is to create a sub domain in the control panel of XYZ and set the A records that to point to IP address.
You don’t have to do that. What you should do is to go Godaddy.com and add sub domain under the Forwarding. I have taken the example of godaddy.com as I have my domain registered there.
Please follow the steps :
1. Logon to Godaddy.com using your username and password
2. Under my accounts, go to domain.
3. Under the domain manager, you can find Forward sub domain on the left bottom as shown in the picture.
4. Add the ip address as shown in the picture.
Please note that you don’t have to do anything at the hosting server if you just want to forward the sub domain to a different ip address. The concept is the DNS don’t have to reach your hosting server in order to get forwarded to a different IP. The traffic can be easily diverted from the domain only.
